Work in progress...
Writing a young children's book is easier than you might think, but there are a few things to consider when doing so.
Having an interesting, funny, cute, heartwarming, sensible, entertaining, emotional, educational or heroic story to tell, is a good place to start. Ideally it would be a combination of some kind. Otherwise whats the point?
If it rhymes then great, if not, that's OK too. The story does not have to be very long to be effective. Use simple language whenever possible. Once you have an outline of the story, do a story board and work out which chunks of text can be illustrated together.
Draw a storyboard and count how many one sided pages your book has from the beginning of the story. Ideally this number will be 26, 30 or 34 pages. Then add one page for the Title Page and one for the Copyright Notice. This excludes the front and back covers.
If your book does not have these exact number of pages then you will have to spread out more or shrink it in. These numbers allow easier printing. A4 is the best size for shipping or mailing books, as well as editing PDF or Word Document Files.
Find an illustrator to merge drawings and text over the prescribed number of pages. Test and adjust how the book reads, sounds and looks throughout until you are happy with it.
